Ellerbe, William Haselden, farmer, governor, was born April 7, 1863, in Marion county. S.C. In 1882 he became engaged in farming. In 1890 he was elected comptrollergeneral of South Carolina. In 1896 he became governor of South Carolina. He died June 2, 1899, in Columbia, S.C.

In 1776-81 and 1783-85 he was a delegate to the continental congress from Rhode Island. He was a signer of the declaration of independence, and also of the articles of confederation. In 1786 was appointed commissioner of loans for Rhode Island; and in 1780-81 was chief justice of the supreme court of the state. In 1789-1820 he was collector of Newport. He died Feb. 15, 1830, in E.I.

She died June 3, 1877. Ellet, Mary, patriot, was born June 17, 1779, in Philadelphia, Pa. She has been termed the Cornelia of America. She won the name by her heroic reply to one who sympathized with her in the loss of sons and grandsons during the civil war. She died in Philadelphia, Pa. Ellet, William Henry, chemist, inventor, was born Nov. 1, 1806, in New York City. For hia discovery of a new and cheap method of preparing gun-cotton, the legislature of South Carolina presented him with a vote of thanks and a pension. He died Jan. 26, 1859.

EUett, Henry T., congressman. In 1847 he was a representative from Mississippi to the

twenty-ninth congress to fill a vacancy. Ellett, Oren Daniel, clergyman, lecturer, author, was born April 5, 1862, in Swart«wood, N.J. He was educated at Albion college, at Northwestern university and at the Chicago seminary of science. He has been state lecturer and chief templar of a district in Iowa; and state chairman of the prohibition party of Iowa. He is a successful clergyman of the methodist episcopal church at Lineville, Iowa and is a member of the Des Moines conference. He is a noted lecturer. He is the author of Why the Bible Wins; The Republican Party and Prohibition; The Conflict; and other works. Ellett, Tazewell, lawyer, congressman, was bom Jan. 1, 1856, in Richmond, Va. He was presidential elector in 1888 on the democratic ticket; and was a member of the democratic committee of fifty for about twelve years. In 1895-97 he was a representative from Virginia to the fifty-fourth congress as a democrat.
