Coates, Edwin Morton, soldier, was born Jan. 29, 1836, in New York City. In 1861 he was first lieutenant in the eleventh New York infantry; and in 1865 attained the rank of captain. In 1898 he was promoted to colonel. In 1900 he was retired as brigadier-general United States army. Coates, Mrs. Florence Earle, poet, was born in 1850 in Philadelphia, Pa. She has gained a national reputation as a genuine poet; and as a musician she possesses an insight and power of interpretation of the great masters.
