army while still a youth; and was taken prisoner at the surprise of John's Island, and confined in the prison ship. He died in 1808 in Beaufort, S.C. and graduated at various times with the degrees of B.S., A.B., A. M., Ph.D. and LL.D. In 1867-68 he taught school in Covington, Ky.; and in 1868-71 in Newport, Ky. In 187179 and 1887-92 he was

superintendent of public schools at Hamilton, Ohio and in 188087 in Sandusky, Ohio. In 1892-99 he was

president of the state agricultural college at Fort Collins, Col.; and also in 1893-99 was director of the Colorado experiment station. Since 1901 he has been president of the Ohio state university at Athens. In 1875-79 and in
