Emerson, William Ralph, designer, archiwas born in 1833. in Illinois. At an early age he moved to Boston, Mass.; and there studied architecture under Jonathan Preston, the designer of the Boston theater. His work has comprised many school houses, theaters and club buildings in different parts of the United States; and numbers of country houses and elegant private dwellings in Boston, Mass. He was one of the promoters and incorporators of the Boston architectural society; and also of the Boston art club. He is credited with having advanced the cause of beautiful architecture more than any other American architect. Emerson, Willis George, educator, lawyer, mine owner, author, was born March 28, tect,

1856. in Blakesburg, Iowa. He was educated in the public schools of Union county, Iowa; and attended Knox college of Galesburg, 111. He was admitted to the bar; taught school for fovir years; and in 1886 engaged in banking in Kansas. In 1888 he was elected republican presidential elector for the seventh Kansas congressional district; and in 190O was appointed commissioner to the Paris exposition. In 1900 he was vice-chairman of the speakers' bureau in the republican

national committee; and has attained prominence as a noted platform orator. He was commissioned from Wyoming to the St. Louis exposition of 1904. He is now president of the Emerson realty company of Loa Angeles, Cal. He is the author of Winning Winds: Fall of Jason; My Partner and I; Buell Hampton; and The Builders. Emerton, Ephraim, educator, author, was born Feb. 18, 1851, in Salem, Mass. He is professor of history at Harvard university.

Emery, Brainerd P., journalist, author, poet, was born March 25, 1865, in Southport, Conn. He is the author of In Sunshine and Shadow; and In the Haunts of Bloom and Bird. Emery, Charles Edward, civil engineer, was born March 29, 1838, in Aurora, N.Y. In 1879 he was appointed engineer of the New York steam company of New York City; and the entire plant of this company was constructed from his designs. He invented numerous appliances for the use of civil engineers. He died June 2, 1898, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Emery, Ernest Webb, librarian, author, was born Dec. 19, 1872, in Fairfield, Maine. He was educated in the common and high schools of his native state. He is principally engaged in literary work. For fifteen years he was assistant state librarian of Maine; and has been secretary of the Maine library association. He is now state librarian of
