Erskine, John, educator, author, was born Oct. 5, 1879, in New York City. In 1903-06 he was an instructor, and since 1906 has been a professor of English at Amherst university. He is the author of The Elizabethan Lyric; and Actteon and Other Poems. Erskine, John, lawyer, jurist, was born in 1813 in Ireland. He resided at Atlanta, Ga.; and in 1866 was appointed United States district judge for the district of Georgia. He died in 1895 in Atlanta, Ga. Erskine, Massena Berthier, manufacturer, banker, was bom Dec. 19, 1819, in Royalton, Mass. He was president of the Racine wagon and carriage company; and president of the Manufacturers national bank of Racine, Wis. He served as mayor of Eaciue in 1869-70, 1871 and 1879. He died in Racine,

Wis. Erskine, Robert, civil engineer, scientist, Sept. 7, 1735, in Scotland. For his scientific researches he was elected a member of the Royal society. He afterward came to the United States and became geographer and surveyor-general to the army. He died Oct. 2, 1780, in Ringwood, N.J. Ervin, James, lawyer, state legislator, congressman, was born Oct. 17, 1778, in Williamsburg district, S.C. He served in the state legislature in 1801-02 and 1804-16. He was solicitor of the northern circuit and for eight years was a trustee of the South Carolina college. In 1817-21 he was a representative from South Carolina to the fifteenth and sixteenth congresses. He died July 7, 1841, near Darlington, S.C. Erving, George William, diplomat, was born in 1771 in Boston, Mass. He was made United States consul to London by Jefferson was secretary of legation to Spain in 1804; was special minister to Denmark in 1811 and minister to Spain in 1814. He died in July, 1850, in New York City. Erving, John, merchant, was born in 1693 in Scotland. He was one of the wealthiest and most distinguished merchants of Boston and was a member of the council of Massachusetts for twenty years. He died Aug, 12, 1786, in Boston, Mass.

Louisiana. He occupied a high rank in the ministry; and was president of Clarksville Female academy and the Huntsville Female college. He died Jan. 10, 1860, in Huntsville, Ala. Erwin, Daniel Peart, merchant, was born April 29, 1844, in Columbia, Pa. In 1875 he became a wholesale dry goods merchant of Peoria, 111., retiring in 1898. He was president of the commercial club for two years.

Erwin, James, lawyer, congressman, was born Oct. 17, 1778, in Williamsburg district, S.C. He graduated from Brown university; and in 1800 was admitted to practice law. In 1800-04 he was a member of the South Carolina house of representatives; and in 1804-16 was solicitor of the northern judicial circuit. In 1817-21 he was a representative from South Carolina to the fifteenth and sixteenth congresses. He died July 7, 1841, in Darlington, D.C. •

Ervdn, Robert Wesley, soldier, physician, surgeon, was born May 24, 1842, in Laceyville, Ohio. During the civil war he was a volunteer soldier in an Ohio regiment. In 1886 he graduated from the Ohio university with the degree of B.S. and in 1879 from the Bellevue hospital medical college of New York City with the degree of M.D. For two years he was a teacher of geometry in the Cooper institute of New York City. He has attained success as a physician in Bay City, Mich.; and has served as United States examining surgeon for Ohio. He was professor of the practice of medicine in the Saginaw valley medical college of Michigan; and for a number of years was a member of the health board of Bay City, Mich. Erwin, William, colonial governor. In 177576 he was colonial governor of Georgia. Esenwein, Joseph Berg, journalist, college president, author, was born May 15, 1867, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1897 he was educational director of the Young men's christian association at Washington Heights, New York City. In 1898-99 he was engaged in literai-y work and foreign travel. Since 1905 he has been editor and general manager of Lippincott's magazine and has been literary adviser to J. B. Lippincott company.
