Fairbanks, Henry, educator, clergyman, inventor, was born May 6, 1830, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. In 1859-68 he was professor at

Dartmouth. Since 1868 he has resided at St. Johnsbury, giving his time to mechanical experiments and to christian work. Fairbanks, Hiram Francis, clergyman, auwas born May 25, 1845, in Leon, N.Y. Fairbanks, Horace, manufacturer, state senator, governor, was born March 21, 1820, in Bamet, Vt. In 1825 he removed with his father's family to St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and became president of the E. and T. Fairbanks scale company. He was a presidential elector in 1868; a state senator in 1869; and a delegate to the republican national conventions of 1864 and 1872. In 1876-78 he was the thirty-first governor of Vermont. He died March 18, 1888, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Fairbanks, Jonathan, pioneer colonist, was born about 1600 in England. He built a dwelling in Dedham which to-day is the oldest inhabited house in the United States. It was brought in sections from England; and in 1897 was bought by the Fairbanks chapter by the daughters of the American revolution. He was the progenitor of the American branch of that family. Fairbanks, Joseph Padaock, manufacturer, educator, journalist, was born in 1806. He was engaged in the manufacture of scales; and as early as 1832 was active in benevolent work. In 1843 he assisted in establishing the St. Johnsbury academy. He was elected to the Vermont state legislature. He established the Vermont school journal. He died in 1855.

Fairbanks, Lorenzo Sayles, lawyer, auwas born March 16, 1825, in Pepperell, Mass. He was the author of a Treatise on Bookkeeping; Business Arithmetic; Marriage and Divorce Laws of Massachusetts; and Genealogy of the Fairbanks Family. He died May 22, 1897, in Massachusetts. Fairbanks, Thaddeus, manufacturer, inventor, was born Jan. 17, 1796, in Brimfield, Mass. He was the originator and patentee of the platform scale which gave to mankind the first real improvement in the methods of weighing articles of commerce, invented since the days of the old Koman thor,

Fairchild, Ashbel Green, clergyman, author, was born May 1, 1795, in Hanover, N.J. He was the author of The Great Supper, long a popular defense of Galvanism; Baptism; Faith and Works; and Confession of Faith. He died in 1864 in Smithfleld, Pa. Fairchild, Benjamin Lewis, lawyer, congressman, was born Jan. 5, 1863, in Sweden, N.Y. He is a noted lawyer of New York City; and has large real estate investments in Westchester county, adjoining New York City. He was the candidate of his party for delegate to the state const "ional convention in 1893; and in 1895-97 he was a representative to the fifty-fourth congress as a republican. Fairchild, Cassius, soldier, was born Dec. He was elected a 36, 1828, in Kent, Ohio. member of the state legislature in 1860. On President Lincoln's first call for troops in 1861, he was commissioned major of the sixteenth Wisconsin volunteers. He died Oct. 26, 1868, in Milwaukee, Wis. Fairchild, Charles Stebbins, lawyer, financier, was born April 30, 1842, in Cazenovia, N.Y. In 1874 he was appointed deputy attorney general of the state of New York; and became attorney general. Ip 1887-89 he was secretary of the United States treasury department. He is a noted lawyer of New York City; has been president of the state charities aid association; and is now president of the New York security and trust company. Fairchild, David Grandison, botanist, scientist, was born April 7, 1869, in Lansing, Mich. He has been a botanist since 1889; has had charge of the foreign explorations since 1903. He organized the work of seed and plant introduction in the United State.^ department of agriculture at Washington.
