He edited the Christian Watchman of Boston, which he left in 1826 to take the chair of theology at the New Hampton, N.H., theological institute. In 1834-51 he was president of the university of Louisville. He died June 4, 1851, in Louisville,

Farnsworth, Elon John, soldier, was bom in 1837 in Green Oak, Mich. In 1861 he became assistant quartermaster of the eighth Illinois cavalry, which his uncle was then organizing. He was soon promoted to captain; and promoted to brigadier-general in 1863; and was killed four days afterward while leading a charge during the battle of Gettysburg. He died July 3, 1863, in Gettysburg, Pa.

Farnsworth, John Franklin, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born March 27, 1820, in Eaton, Canada. In 1857-61 and 1863-73 he was a representative from

Illinois to

thirty-fifth, thirty-sixth, thirty-eighth, thirty-ninth, fortieth, forty-first and forty-sec-

ond congresses as a republican. In 1861 he took part in the war as colonel of volunteers; raised and took into the field the eighth regiment of Illinois cavalry, serving in the army of the Potomac until 1863. In 1863-64 he raised the seventeenth regiment of Illinois volunteers by order of the war department) and was brevetted a brigadier-general in 1862. He died June 1-t, 1897, in Washington, D.C.

Farnsworth, Joseph Downing, physician, jurist, was born about 1780 in Middletown, Conn. For more than fifty years he was one of the most eminent physicians in Vermont. He was for fifteen years chief judge in Franklin county, and for twentylegislator,

Farnsworth, Moses Franklin, soldier, merchant, genealogist, was born Feb. 5, 1834, in Edinburg, Ind. In 1857 he was first lieutenant of the Nauvoo legion; was recorder of St. George temple in 1877; and at Manti in 1888. He is the author of the Farnsworth

Memorial; and History of Manti, Utah. Farnsworth, Philo Judson, physician, author, was born Jan. 9, 1832, in Westford, Vt. In 1870 he was elected to the chair of materla medica and diseases of children at the university of Iowa. He is the author of a synopsis of a course of lectures on materia medica. Famum, John Egbert, soldier, was born April I, 1824, in New Jersey. He took part in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg;, and was brevetted brigadier-general for gallant conduct in those engagements. He died May 16, 1870, in New

Farquhar, Edward, librarian, author, was born Sept. 2, 1843, in Sandy Springs, Md. In 1865-1905 he has been assistant librarian in the United States patent office. He was the author of Elements of Unity in Homeric Poems. He died in 1905 in Washington, D.C. Farquhar, Henry, educator, author, was born Aug. 27, 1851, in Sandy Springs, Md. For awhile he was engaged in educational work; and then was on the United States coast survey. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. He is the author of Economic and Industrial Delusions.

steamer Mahaska, of the North Atlantic squadron. He was commandant of cadets at the United States naval academy in 188186; and in 1890 became commandant of the Norfolk navy yard. He attained the rank of rear-admiral in the United States navy. He died July 3, 1907, in Newport, R.I. Farr, Evarts W., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Oct. 10, 1840, in Littleton, N.H. He served throughout the civil war; rising to the rank of major. In 1870-73 he was assessor of internal revenue in 1870. He was prosecuting attorney for Grafton county in 1873 and 1876; and was a member of the executive council in 1876. In 1879-81 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the forty-sixth congress. He died Nov. 30, 1880, in Littleton, N.H. Farr, George H., soldier, lawyer, state senator, was born July 27, 1843, in Niagara county, N.Y. In 1861 he enlisted in the Adrian cadets and was in the first battle of Bull Run. He then enlisted in the United States artillery; and served through the war. He was a member of the Michigan state senate in 1878-82. He was appointed collector of customs for the district of Michigan in 1897. Farra, Bernard Gains, soldier, was born in Missouri. In 1862 he became colonel in the thirtieth regiment Missouri infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Farragut, Loyall, soldier, author, was born in 1844 in Norfolk, Va. He was educated at
