seeker in California; traveled -^^^1 and returned to Morrisville, N.Y., and there he resumed the practice of law. In 1854 he returned to Chicago, 111.; and in 1870-79 was one of the judges of the circuit court. He was then elected chief justice of the circuit court of Cook county. 111. Fasnacht, Charles H., soldier, was born March 27, 1842, in Lancaster county. Pa. In 1861-65 he served in the ninety-ninth Pennsylvania regiment; and mustered out as first lieutenant. For his gallantry he received the United States medal of honor; a silver medal from the directors of the sanitary fair at Philadelphia; and the bronze Kearny badge. Fasquelle, Jean Louis, educator, author, was bom in 1808 in France. He was professor of modern languages at Michigan university in 1846-63. He was the author of Lessons in French; French Course; and General and Idiomatic Dictionary of the French and English Languages. He died in 1862 in Michigan. Fassett, Cornelia Adele, artist, was born Nov. 9, 1831, in Owasco, N.Y. She has executed portraits of Vice-President Henry Wilson, Justices Jfiller and Field, ChiefJustice Waite, President Garfield, John A. Logan, Clara Barton, and others; and iii 1877-80 painted The Electoral Commission in Open Session, containing portraits of about two hundred persons. She died Jan. 4, 1898, in Washington, D.C. Fassett, Jacob Sloat, lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Nov. 13, lS53, in Elmira, N.Y". In 1875 he graduated from the Rochester university; and in 1878 was

In 1905-11 he was a representative from New York to the fifty-ninth, sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a. republican. Fassett, James Hiram, educator, author, was born Jan. 11, 1869, in Nashua, N.H. He is superintendent of schools at Nashua, N.H. He is the author of Colonial Life in New
Hampshire. Faulk, Andrew Jackson, governor, was born Nov. 26, 1814, in Mulford, Pa. He was governor of the territory of Dakota in 186669. He died Sept. 4, 1898, in Yankton, S.D. Faulkner, Charles James, soldier, state senator, congressman, was born in 1806 in Martinsburg, W.Va. In 1841 he was elected to the state senate of Virginia; and in 1848 was elected to the house of delegates. In 1850 he M'as a member of the convention formed to revise the constitution of the state. In 1851-59 and 1875-77 he was a representative to the thirty-second, thirty-, third, thirty-fourth, thirty-fifth and fortyfourth congresses. In the civil war he acted as chief of staff for General Stonewall Jackson; and wrote all his reports and dispatches. In 1873 he was a member of the convention to frame a constitution for West Virginia. He died Nov. 1, 1884, in Boydville,

Faulkner, Charles James, soldier, jurist. United States senator, was born Sept. 21, His early 1847, in Martinsburg, W.Va. education was obtained in France and Switzerland; and in 1862 he entered the Virginia military institution at Lexington. In 1868 he graduated from the university of Virginia. He served with the cadets at the battle of
Newmarket;
and afterward as aide to
Generals
Brecken-
ridge and Wise in the confederate states army to the end of the civil war. In 1868 he was admitted to the practice of law; and in 1879 became grand master of masons. In 1880-87 he was judge of the thirteenth judicial circuit of West Virginia, In 1887-99 he was a member of the United States senate. In 1892 he was both temporary and permanent chairman of the democratic state convention; and in 1894, 1896 and 1898 he was chairman of the democratic congressional campaign committee. Faulkner, John Alfred, educator, clergyman, theologian, author, was born July 14, Since 1897 he has 1857, in Nova Scotia. been professor at the Drew theological seminary at Madison, N.J. He is the author of
