Fessenden, James Deering, soldier, legiswas born Sept. 28, 1833, in Westbrook, Maine. He was promoted brigadier-general of volunteers in 1864. In 1865 he was brevetted major-general of volunteers, and was on duty in South Carolina. He was appointed register in bankruptcy for the iirst district of Maine in 1868; and represented Portland in the legislature in 1872-74. He died Nov. 18, 1882, in Portland, Maine.

In 1815-16 he was in the general court of Massachusetts; and in 1818-19 represented his district in the Massachusetts state senate. For fourteen years he was major-general of the twelfth division of Massachusetts militia. He died March 13, 1869, in Portland, Maine. Fessenden, Samuel, soldier, lawyer, state legislator, was born April 12, 1847, in Rockland, Maine. He was appointed second lieutenant in the fifth Maine battery in 1865. He was a member of the Connecticut house of representatives in 1874, 1879 and 1895; and was speaker in his last term. Fessenden, Samuel Clement, clergyman, lawyer, congressman, was born March 7, 1815, in New Gloucester, Maine. In 1856 he established the Maine Evangelist; in 1858 entered upon the practice of law; and soon after was elected judge of the municipal court of Rockland. In 1861-63 he was a representative from Maine to the thirty-seventh congress. In 1865 he was appointed a member of the board of examiners of the patent office. He died in 1881 in Rockland, Maine. In 1861-63 he was a representative from Maine to the thirtyseventh congress to fill a vacancy. He died Sept. 28, 1868, in Lewiston, Maine.
