She was the author of The Boarding School; Letters of a Preeeptre.'ss; but is remembered chiefly for having been the author of the once famous story. The Coquette, or the History of Eliza Wharton. She died in 1840 in Montreal, Canada. Foster, Henry Allen, jurist, congressman. United State senator, was born May 7, 1800, in Hartford, Conn. 1827, in Bullitt county, Ky. In 1863 he distinguished himself by the valuable service performed by his vessel during the Yazoo expedition. After the civil war he was placed in charge of the trainingships. He was then promoted to commander. He died June 2, 1869, in Indianapolis, Ind. Foster, Jedediah, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Oct. 10, 1736, in Andover, Mass. In 1776-79 he was justice of the supreme court of Massachusetts; and was for many years a judge of probate, and also of the court of common pleas. He died Oct. 17, 1779, in Brookfield, Mass. Foster, John Gray, soldier, civil engineer, was born May 27, 1823, in Whitefield, N.H. He was educated in the public schools and academies of New

ceived the brevets of first lieutenant and captain for gallantry. He was assistant engineer in Maryland in 1848-52; and on coast survey duty in Washington, in 185354.
