the bar; and in 1868-70 and 1873-77 he was assistant prosecuting attorney for Kanawha county, W.Va. In 1873-77 he was United States consul to Nicaragua. In 1896-99 he was judge of the fourth judicial district. In 1899-1901 he was a representative to the fifty-sixth congress as a republican. Freiner, John Robert, business man, lumberman, statesman, was born April 31, 1859, in Fairfield, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools of his native state; and graduated from the Capac high school. He is a successful lumberman of McArthur, Ohio. He is a representative in the Ohio state legislature; and was the author of Ohio's twocent rate law, which is the first straight twocent rate law ever passed in the United States. Freitag, Joseph Kendall, civil engineer, author. He is a noted civil engineer of Boston, Mass. He is the author of Architectural Engineering; and The Fireproof ing of Steel Buildings. Freligh, Louis Henry, composer, was born July 1, 1838, in Mechanicsville, N.Y. He is the author of about fifty piano pieces and songs; and is a, successful pianist of St. Louis, Mo. Frelinghuysen, Frederick, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born April 13, 1753, in New Jersey. In 1778-79 and 1782-83 he was a delegate from New Jersey to the continental congress. He was captain of a volunteer corps of artillery at the battles of Trenton and Monmouth; and it is said that it was he who killed Rhalle, the Hessian commander at Trenton. In 1793-96 he was United States senator. He died April 13, 1804, in New Jersey.

Frelinghuysen, Frederick Theodore, lawyer. United States senator, cabinet ofiicer, was born Aug. 4, 1817, in Millstown, N.J. He was appointed attorney general of New Jersey in 1861, and reappointed in 1866. In 1865-69 and 1871-77 he was United States senator from New Jersey; and in 1881-85 he was secretary of state. He died May 20, 1885, in

Newark, N.J.

Frelinghuysen, John, educator, founder, in 1727 in Three Mile Run, N.J. He undertook the education of young men for the ministry; and to his labors in this direction Queen's college, now Rutgers, is largely indebted for its establishment. He died in September, 1754, in Long Island, N.Y. Frelinghuysen, John, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born March 21, 1776, near Millstone, N.J. For many years he was a member of the state council; and for fifteen years was surrogate of his county. During the war of 1812 he was promoted to brigadier-general. He died April 10, 1833, in Millstone, N..J.

Fremont, Mrs. Jessie Benton, author, was born in 1824 in Virginia. She is a resident of Los Angeles; and the wife of the late General John C. Fremont. She is the author of The Story of the Guard, a Chronicle of the War; A Year of American Travel; Souvenirs of My Time; Sketch of Senator Benton; Far West Sketches; and Will and the Way Stories. He died in 1902 in Los Angeles, Cal. Fremont, John Charles, soldier, author. United States senator, was born Jan. 21, 1813, in Savannah, 6a. He was a famous soldier and politician; in 1842 headed the first expedition for the Rocky mountains; and in 1856 was the first republican candidate for the presidency of the United States. In 1849-51 he was United States senator. He served during the civil war as a major-general in the federal army; and in 1878-82 was governor of the territory of Arizona. He was the author of Report of the Exploring Expedition to the Rocky

Mountains in 1842, and to Oregon and Northern California in 1843-44; Fremont's Explorations; and Memoirs of My Life.

He

died July 13, 1890, in

French, Alice, author, was born March 19, 1850, in Andover, Mass. She is president of the Iowa society of colonial dames. She is the author of Knitters in the Svin Otto the Knight, and other Trans-Mississippi Stories; Stories of a Western Town; An Adventure in Photography; and Expiation. French, Allen, writer, author, was bom Nov. 28, 1870, in Boston, Mass. He resides in Concord, Mass.' He is the author of The Junior Cup; and The Colonials.

French, Andrew, farmer, statesman, was 10, 1859, in Green Lake county. was educated in the public schools of his native state. For many years he was engaged in agricultural pursuits; and is secretary of the Plainview farmers mutual fire insurance company. He has been a representative in the Minnesota state legislature; was chairman of the township board of supervisors; and for three terms served as mayor of Plainview.
