born JNIarch 20, 1777, in Culpeper county, Va. He entered the army in 1799, and rose gradually until he was made major-general for hi", gallantry at Fort Erie in 1814. He remained in the army until his death. He died June 6, 1849, in New Orleans, La. Gaines, Frank Henry, clergyman, college president, author, was born July 35, 1853, in Tellico Plains, Tenn. In 1876-88 he filled pastorates in Kentucky and Virginia. Since 1895 he has been president of the Agnes Scott college at Decatur, Ga. He is the author of Bible Course, Outline and Notes.

Gaines, Keuben Reid, lawyer, jurist, was 30, 1836, in Sumter county, Ala. He practiced law in Texas until 1876. In 1877-85 he was judge of the sixth judicial district of Texas. In 1885-94 he was associate justice of the state supreme court of Texas; and has been chief justice since 1894.
