court of New Orleans. In 1835 he was elected United States senator. In 1843 lie was again returned to the state legislature; and in 1846-53 was secretary of state. He was the author of History of Louisiana; Romance of the History of Louisiana; Spanish dramatic novel Domination in Louisiana; called The School of Politics; and work on The Influence of the Mechanic Arts. He died Feb. 11, 1895, in New Orleans, La. Gayle, John, lawyer, jurist, congressman, governor, was aborn Sept. 11, 1792, in Sumter, S.C. In 1817 he was appointed a member of the territorial legislature; and in 1333 was elected judge of the supreme court of the state. In 1829 he was elected to the stat legislature, and was speaker of the house. In 1831-35 he was the sixth governor of Alabama. In 1847-49 he was a representative from Alabama to the thirtieth congress; and in 1849 was appointed district judge of the United States district court of Alabama. He died July 31, 1859, near Mobile, Ala. Gayle, June W., public official, congressman, was bom Feb. 33, 1865, in New Liberty, Ky. He served as deputy sheriflF for several years; and in 1893 was high sheriflE of Owen county, Ky. In 1899-1900 he was a representative from Kentucky to the fiftysixth congress. Gayler, Charles, dramatist, author, was bom April 1, 1830, in New York City. Among many plays are The Gold Hunters; Taking the Chances; Fritz. Among his various novels are The Romance of a Poor Young Man; and Out of the Streets, both of which were dramatized by their author. He died May 38, 1893, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Gayley, Charles Mills, educator, author, Since 23, 1858, in China. 1889 he has been professor of English language and literature at the university of California. He is the author of Songs of Yellow and Blue; Guide to Literature of j35sthetic3; Classic Myths in English Literature; and other works. Gaylord, Harvey Russell, surgeon, author, was bom Oct. 4, 1873, in Saginaw, Mich. Since 1899 he has been professor of surgical pathology at the university of Buffalo. In 1873-82 he was in the baptist ministry; and in 1883-83 taught in the Atlanta baptist seminary. He is now a successful lawyer of San Francisco, Gal. He is the author of Relation of Baptism to the Lord's Supper; Index-Digest of California Reports; a volume of California Digest; and Law of Landlord and Tenant. Gazzam, Joseph M., lawyer, banker, statesman, was bom Dec. 3, 1843, in Pittsburg, Pa. He received a thorough education; and graduated from the Western university of Pennsylvania. In 1864 he was admitted to the practice of law; and several years later was admitted to practice in the supreme courts of Pennsylvania and the United States. In 1864-79 he practiced his profession in Pittsburg; and was a member of the city council. In 1879 he moved to Philadelphia; and his practice has been almost exclusively in connection with corporate enterprises and interests. He has attained success as one of the foremost lawyers of his native state; and enjoys a large practice. He has served with distinction as a member of the Pennsylvania state senate. He is president of the Quaker City national bank; president of the Kenilworth laud company of Asheville, N.C.; president of the Rees Walsh law and digest publishing company; and an officer or director of the Union league club; the Lawyers' club; the Franklin institute and the historical society of Pennsylvania, and a member of the Reform club of New York City, and various other clubs and societies. Gear, John Henry, merchant, governor, United States senator, congressman, was born April 7, 1825, in Ithaca, N.Y. He moved to Burlington in 1843, where he engaged in merchandising. He was a member of the Iowa house of representatives of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth general assemblies of the state, serving as speaker for the last two terms. He was the tenth governor of Iowa in 1878-82. In 1887-91 and 1893-95 he was a representative to the fiftieth, fifty-first and fifty-third congresses as a republican; was assistant secretary of the treasury. In 1895-1901 he was United States senator from Iowa. He died July 14, 1900, in Burlington, Iowa. Gearin, John M., lawyer.
