Glisson, Oliver S., naval officer, was born Jan. 18, 1809, in Ohio. In 1836 he was made a midshipman; captain in 1863; commodore in 1866; and rear-admiral in 1870; and was retired in 1871. He died Nov. 30, 1890, in Philadelphia, Pa.

In 1869-71 he was rector of St. Paul's church, Oregon; and in 1871-84 he was principal of St. Michael's college at Portland, Ore. In 1885 he was consecrated catholic bishop of ApoUonia, and appointed vicar apostolic of Idaho; and in 1893 became bishop of Boise City, Idaho. The Right Rev. mathematician, actuary, was born July 34, 1868, in Clio, Mich. He graduated from the high school of Saginaw; studied in the universities of Michigan and Harvard; and has received the degrees of B.L., A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. In 1895 he was appointed instructor

in

mathematics

at

the university

of

Michigan; became senior instructor in 1899; in 1903 became assistant professor of mathematics and lecturer on insurance; and since 1906 has been junior professor of mathematics and insurance in that institution. In 1903 he established the insurance course at the university of Michigan. In 1906 he served as expert to the royal commission on insurance in Canada; the same year was consulting actuary to the Wisconsin legislative insurance committee; and in 1907 to the Wisconsin legislative joint committee on banks and insurance. He has been a

member

of several international actuarial congresses; and is the author of numerous

Monographs and articles on mathematics, actuarial and insurance theory and on vital statistics.

Glover, John, soldier, was born Nov. 5, 1733, in Salem. Mass. He served with distinction through the revolutionary war; and was made brigadier-general in 1777. During 1780 he superintended the drafts from Massachusetts. He died Jan. 30, 1797, in
