Gowen, Franklin Benjamin, lawyer, railroad manager, was born on Feb. 9, 1S36, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1862 he was elected district attorney of Schuylkill county. He was counsel for the Philadelphia and Reading railroad, and of the Girard coal trusts, in connection with their large interests in the mining region. He conceived and established the Philadelphia and Reading coal and iron company, which is probably the largest land and mining company ever organized in this country. He died Dec. 14, 1889, in Washington, D.C.

Grace, Francis Mitchell, educator, clergycollege president, was box'n Feb. 28, In 18.S2, in what is now Birmingham, Ala. 1853 he was ordained to the ministry of the methodist episcopal church south. In 187172 he was professor at Hiawassee college; in 1883-88 was president of Mansfield female college of Louisiana; and was professor in the north Alabama conference college. He died in 1904 in Louisiana.

Gracey, John Talbot, clergyman, lecturer, author, was born Sept. 16, 1831, in Delaware county, Pa. For eight years he was a missionary to India. He is a noted lecturer; and editor of The Missionary Review of the World. He is the author of India; China; and History of Methodist Episcopal Missions, in three volumes. Gradle, Henry, physician, author, was born Aug. 17, 1855, in Germany. He was professor of physiology and is now professor of diseases of the eye and ear at the Northwestern university medical school. He is the author of Bacteria and the Germ Theory of Disease. Grady, Benjamin F., soldier, educator, congressman, was born Oct. 10, 1831, in Dublin county, N.C. In 1881-88 he was superintendent of public schools of Dublin county, Texas; and justice of the peace in 1879-90. He was one of the trustees of the North Carolina state university in 1873-90. In 1891-95 he was a representative to the fiftysecond and fifty-third congresses as a democrat.
