13, 1737, in Warwick, R.I. served in the Rhode Island legislature in 1773-74; and was then chosen a lieutenant in the Kentish Guards in 1774. In 1775 he was appointed by the legislature a major in the army of observation was given command of a company; and was subsequently placed in command of the first battalion under Benedict Arnold. In 1776 he was promoted to major and the same year was commissioned colonel with charge of Fort Mercer on the Delaware. In 1786 he was voted a sword by congress which he presented to his son, who was then secretary of war. He died May 13, 1781, in Westchester county, N.Y.
