Greenewalt, Mrs.

Hallock, pianist, 8, 1871, in Syria. In 1888 she graduated from the Chelten Hills school of Philadelphia, Pa.; studied tue piano in Vienna; and in 1893 graduated from the Philadelphia musical academy. In 1898 she married Dr. Frank L. Greenewalt of Philadelpuia, Pa. She was a piano soloist with the Pittsburg and with the Philadelphia symphony orchestras in tours. She has concertized as a pianist throughout America lectured on Rhythm at the university of Kansas, and at Earlham, Holyoke and Vassar colleges; and is a director of the Browning society of Philadelphia, Pa. She is the author of an authorized text -book on the Leschetizky Method; and numerous articles representing original research, such as Pulse Rhythm, and Pulse artist,

Greenfield, Elizabeth Taylor, singer, was born in 1808 in Natchez, Miss. She was of African descent and was born a slave and was freed by her mistress, one sang with success in America and in England. She was known as the Black Swan. She died in 1876 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Frederick Thomas, lawyer, congressman, governor, was born July 19, 1842, in England. He served in the union army during 1863-64 in the commis.sary department. In 1874-84 he was special justice of the police court; and in 1880-81 he served with distinction as mayor of Lowell. In 1884 he was a delegate to the national republican convention; in 1885 he was a member of the Massachusetts house of representatives; and in 1889-91 he was a Greenhalge,

legislator,

representative to the fifty-first congress. He was the thirty-seventh governor of Massachusetts in 1894-97. He died on March 5, 1896, in Lowell, Mass.

Greenhow, Robert, physician, surgeon, auwas born in 1800 in Richmond, Va. He became translator to the department of state in Washington in 1828; and in 1850 removed to California, where in 1853 he was associate law agent to the United States land commission. He was the author of History of Tripoli; and History of Oregon and California. He died in 1854 in San thor,

Francisco, Cal. Greenleaf, Benjamin, educator, author, Sept. 25, 1786, in Haverhill, Mass. In 1839-48 he was principal of Bradford teachers seminary. He represented Bradford in the state legislature in 1837-39. He was the author of a popular series of text-books on arithmetic and the higher mathematics. He died Oct. 29, 1864, in Bradford, Mass.

Greenleaf, Charles Ravenscroft, physician, surgeon, author, was born Jan. 1, 1838, in Carlisle, Pa. During the civil war he was deputy surgeon-general in the United States army. He is a noted physician and surgeon of San Francisco, Cal. He is the author of Greenleaf's Manual for Medical Officers; and otner medico-military works. Greenieaf, Edmund, soldier, colonist, was born in England. In 1863 he estauiished himself in Boston as a silk dyer. In 1837 he fought against the Indians; and in 1839 he was appointed in a military company at Newbury. He died in 1871. Greenleaf, Ezekiel Price, philanthropist, was born May 23, 1790, in Quincy, Mass. He bequeatned nearly all his estate, amounting to half a million dollars, to Harvard, with directions to keep it apart from other bequests, as the Greenleaf fund. He died Dec. 3, 1886, in Boston, Mass. Greenleaf, Franklin Lewis, manufacturer, business president, was born Oct. 7, 1847, in Boston, Mass. He has been a prominent factor in developing the wheat industry of the northwest; and was for several years president of the Red river valley elevator company. In 1889 he was elected president of the Minneapolis chamber of commerce. Greenleaf, Mrs. Georgie H. Frank, founder, author, was born Nov. 13, 1849, in Baltimore, Md. She started relief work on the Pacific coast during the Spanish-American war. She is the founder and director of the American library at Manila, P.I. She is the author of My Life Among the Indians. Greenleaf, Halbert Stevens, soldier, manufacturer, congressman, was born April 12, 1837, in Guilford, Vt. He was educated in ' the public schools, and _ 3 at the academy at Brattleboro, Vt. Greenleaf, James Edward, soldier, merchant, author, was born Aug. 2, 1833, in Portland, Maine. He was an organist for twenty-seven years and a captain in the Genealogy of militia. He is the author of the Greenleaf Family.
