born Oct. 37, 1861, in New York City. In 1884 he graduated from Colgate university and received the degrees of A.B. and LL.D. from that institution of learning. In 1885 he was admitted to the bar; and in 1895 was the democratic candidate for mayor of Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1897 he was elected president of the borough of Brooklyn. In 1901 he was elected comptroller of New York City on the fusion ticket; and in 1903 was elected to the same office on the Tammany ticket. In 1894-1904 he was judge advocate and major of the second brigade New York national guard. Grout, Jonathan, soldier, lawyer, congress23, 1737, in Lunenburg, Mass. He served for a short time in the revolutionary army. In 184762 he was a congregational missionary among the Zulus. In 1862-88 he filled pastorates in the United States; and in 1888 became devoted to historical labors. He was the author of A Grammar of the Zulu Language. He died in 1905. Grout, William W., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born May 24, 1836, in Canada, of American parents. He was a member of the Vermont house of representatives in 1868-70 and 1874, and of the senate in 1876. In 1881-83 and 1885-1901 he was a, representative to the forty-seventh, fortyninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, fifty-second, fiftythird, fifty- fourth, fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth congresses. He died on Oct. 3, 1902, in St.

He served as sergeant in troop C, New York volunteer cavalry, in the Porto Ilico campaign of 1898 during the Spanish -American war; and is now captain of troop six, squadron C, New York national guard. He is a director of the United States title guarantee and indemnity company; a director in the People's surety company and other corporations.

Grover, Asa P., lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Feb. 18, 1819, in Ontario county, N.Y. He was elected to the state senate in 1857-65. In 1867-69 he was a representative from Kentucky to the fortieth congress as a democrat. He died in Louisville,

Grover, Cuvier, soldier, was born July 24, 1829, in Bethel, Maine. In 1850 he graduated from the United States military academy; and was assigned to the first artillery. He served on the frontier till 1853; and 1853-54 on the
Northern Pacific railroad exploration; after which he served at various western stations. In 1862 he be-
came brigadier-general of volunteers was
transferred to the army of the Potomac; and in 1875 was made colonel. He died June 6, 1885, in Atlantic City, N.J. Grover, Ira Glanton, soldier, was bom in Indiana. In 1861 he was first lieutenant in the seventh regiment Indiana infantry; and iii 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died. May 30, 1876.
