Guernsey, Frank Edward, lawyer, banker, congressman, was bom Oct. 15, 1866, in Dover, Maine. He was educated in the common schools. Foxcroft academy of eastern Maine, Conference seminary at Bucksport, Maine Wesleyan seminary at Kents Hill, and the Eastman business college at Poughkeepsie, X.Y. In 1890 he was admitted to the practice of law; and in 1890-96 was trea'iurer of Piscataquis county, Maine. In 1897-99 he was a member of the Maine house of representatives; and in 1903 was a member of the Maine state senate. He is president of the Piscataquis savings bank at Dover, Maine. In 1908-11 he was a representative from Maine to the sixtieth congress to fill a vacancy and to the sixty-first congress as a republican. Guernsey, Eocellus Sheridan, lawyer, author, was born April 10, 1836, in Westford, N.Y. He has been a member of the bar of the United States supreme court since 1863. He is the author of Juries and Physicians on Insanity; Mechanics' Lien Laws for New York City; Municipal Law and Its Relations to the Constitution of Man; Key to Story's Equity Jurisprudence; Living Authors at the New York Bar; Suicide, a History of the Penal Laws Relating to It; New York City and Vicinity During the War of 1812; and Taxation 'and Its Relations to Capital and Labor. Guffey, James McCIurg, merchant, manustatesman, was born Jan. 19, facturer, 1839, in Sewickley, Pa. He is of Scotch descent and his paternal ancestor came to Philadelphia in 1838; in 1858 they settled in Westmoreland county; and in 1780 purchased part of the territory of the present township of Sewickley, Pa., where the deFor scendants of the Guffeys still dwell. several years he was in the railway service

At the age of sixteen he enlisted in the famous regiment, the Pontifical Zouaves, Rome, and served during the campaigi»s of 1870 up to the fall of Rome. He returned to America and entered journalism at Lowell, Mass.; subsequently taught school; and is now a noted lawyer of that city. He was decorated by the Pope with a, military medal; was created by Leo XIII a knight commander of He th Military Order of Saint Sylvester. has been president of several associations.
