He was educated at the Minnesota state normal school at Winona, Minn.; and in various other educational institutions. He has been county superintendent of schools for Olmsted county, Minn. was city superintendent of schools at Sauk Center, Minn.; and a teacher at Winona and other institutions. He is now president of the South Dakota state normal lege president,

Cook, Francis Ames, naval officer, was born May 10, 1843, in Northampton, Mass. He became a master in 1866; became lieutenant-commander two years later; and was made commander in 1881. He was appointed a captain in 1896; and soon after assigned to the command of the Brooklyn, the flagship of Commodore Schley, commanding the flying squadron, which played so important a part in the naval battle and victory of Santiago in 1898. Cook, Francis Augustus, naval officer, was bom May 10, 1843, in Northampton, Mass. In 1898-99 in the Spanish-American war he commanded the Brooklyn; and received the surrender of the Spanish warship Cristobal Colon. In 1899 he was appointed to the United States naval examining board. Cook, Frederick Albert, physician, explorer, author, was born June 10, 1865, in Sulivan county, N.Y. He was surgeon of the Peary arctic expedition in 1891-92; and surgeon of the Belgium antarctic expedition in 1897-99. He is the author of Through the First Antarctic Night. Cook, George Cram, educator, author, was bom Oct. 7, 1873, in Davenport, Iowa. He is a professor in the Leland Stanford university of California. He is the author of In Hampton Eoads. Cook, George Fox, educator, lawyer, college president, was Cincinnati, Ohio. He

born Oct. 8, 1862, in was educated at the university of Chicago then for' several years he practiced law in Cincinnati, Ohio; and is now president of the Southwest Kansas college of Winfield, Kan.; and also fills the chair of mathematics and astronomy in that insti;

tution.

Cook, George Hammell, educator, author, was born Jan. 5, 1818, in Hanover, N.J. He was professor of geology in Rutgers college

and state geologist. His only published work The Geology of New Jersey. He died Sept. 22, 1889, in New B'mnswick, N.J. Cook, George Washington, mayor, congressman, was born Nov. 10, 1851, in Bedford, Tnd. When twelve years of age he ran away from home and enlisted as drummer boy in an Indiana regiment, army of the Cumberland; and two years later he was regimental clerk of the one hundred and fortv-fifth regiment Indiana volunteers. He received an academic education after the civil war. In 1872 he began business life railroading in Chicago, 111.; and in 1887 is

was division superintendent of the Union pacific railroad. 1h 1885-87 he was mayor of Leadville, Col.; and declined the third term of oflice. Since 1889 he has been actively engaged in mining. In 1891-92 he was depart-

ment commander of the army of the republic for Colorado and Wyoming. In 1907-09 he was a representative from Colorado to the sixtieth congress as a republican.

Cook, Henry Clay, soldier, was Sept. 20, 1837, in Fall River, Mass. In 1861 he was second lieutenant in the second regiment

Rhode Island infantry; and attained the rank of brigadier-general. Cook, Henry F., soldier, was born in Mississippi.

served as

lieutenant in the

Mexican war, with Jefferson Davis's regiment of Mississippi volunteers; and commanded a company in the battle of Buena Vista. At the beginning of the civil war he joined the confederate army; and rose by successive steps until he was made a brigadier-general in 1863. He was killed in battle Oct. 14, 1863, in Bristow Station, Va. Cook, Isaac, manufacturer, government official, was born July 4, 1810, in Long Branch, N.J. In 1844 he was state agent for the canal lands; and in 1848 was sheriff and treasurer. In 1852 he was appointed postmaster of Chicago, 111.; and in 1859 was president of the American wine company. He died June 23, 1886, in Eureka Springs,

Ark. Cook, James Merrill, financier, was born Nov. 19, 1807, in Ballston, N.Y. In 1854-55 he filled the office of state comptroller; was president of the Ballston Spa bank, having been one of the original incorporators, and the owner of a large amount of stock in that and other institutions. He died April 12, 1868, in Saratoga, N.Y. Cook, Joel, journalist, banker, congressman, author, was born March 20, 1824, in Philadelphia, Pa. He graduated from the central high school; and was admitted to the practice of law. He adopted journalism as a profession; and served various newspapers during a period of forty-five years. He was president of the city national bank of Philadelphia, Pa.; and president of the Philadelphia board of trade. In 1907-11 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the sixtieth and a republican. He

Cook, John, governor. In 1783 he was republican president of Delaware. Cook, John, soldier, legislator, was bom June 12, 1826, in Belleville, 111. In 1854 he

years later became sheriff of Sangamon county; and in 1858 was appointed quartermaster-general of Illinois. He became a general during the civil war. In 1868 he was a member of the Illinois state legislature; and was instrumental in securing the second appropriation for the erection of the new state house.
