In 1893 he was professor of philosophy and logic at Rutgers college of New Bumside, N.J. He was the author of The Natural Right to Make a Will; and The Passage from Mind to Matter. He died in 1904 in New Brunswick, N.J. Cooper, James, soldier, lawyer, United States senator, was born May 8, 1810, in Frederick county, Md. In 1839-43 he was a, representative from Pennsylvania to the twenty-sixth' and the
twenty-seventh congresses. In 1843 he
was
elected to the state legislature, and was re-elected in 1844, 1846 and 1848, serving as speaker during 1847. In 1848 he was
appointed an attorneygeneral of Pennsylvania; and in 1849-55 he was tJnited States senator. In 1863 he was made a brigadier-general in the army. He died March 28, 1863, in Columbus, Ohio. Cooper, James B., naval officer, was born March 6, 1753, in Bucks county, Pa. In 1813 he entered the navy as master; and served in that capacity during the war. He was

Campbell, mineralogist, was bom June 16, 1832, in Baltimore, Md. He has taken great interest in the study of geology ajid mineralogy; and has collected, located and named fiilly fifty thousand specimens of minerals, including a collection of nine thousand specimens that he presented the university of Kansas. Cooper, James Fenimore, author, was born Sept. 15, 1789, in Burlington, N.J. He was the first. American writer to gain general European recognition; and the first/ native novelist who won a national reputation. His first novel, Precaution, appeared in 1820; and
was followed in 1831 by The Spy, the most famous of all his books, it having been translated into all the principal languages of Europe. Almost as fa-
mous was The Last of the Mohicans, a much greater work. Among his tales of the sea. The Pilot, and The Red Rover are the best; as the five Leather Stocking Tales are the best of the stories His other fictions include of Indian life.

Barnum, W. W. Cole and James L. Hutchinson; the show taking the name of P. T. Barnum and company's greatest show on earth. In 1890 he purchased the Adam Forepaugh shows. He died Jan. 1, 1893, in Philadelphia, Pa.
James Wesley, clergyman, auwas born Oct., 6, 1843, in New Haven,

Conn. In 1865 he graduated from Yale and in 1865 from Andover theological seminaries; and subsequently received from those institutions the degrees of A.M. and D.D. During and following the civil war he was asadjutant-gensistant eral; and in 1878-88 chaplain of the Gist regiment Connecticut national guard. Since 1868 he has filled pastorates in the congregational church; in Lockport, N.Y.; in 1878-1903 in Britain, Conn.; and since 1903 has been corresponding secretary of the American missionary association. He is the author of Gospel Truth; and numerous addresses, sermons
and reports. Cooper, Job Adams, banker, governor, was born Nov. 6, 1843, in Bond county, 111. His interest in public affairs led to his service in the Denver city council in 1876 and his election as treasurer of the state university at Boulder. In 1889-91 he was the sixth governor of Colorado. He was for some time president of the First national bank; and president of the National bank of commerce. He died Jan. 30, 1899, in Denver, Col. Cooper ,John, congressman, was born in

Jersey. In 1776 he was a delegate from Jersey to the continental congress. He died in New Jersey. Cooper, John Edmond Smith, soldier, was born in Missouri.
