narrow escapes; he and Lochiel embarked on the 20th of September, in a privateer of St. Malo, ordered by Sheridan and some other adherents, having set Sail for France, they passed unseen, under cover of a thick fog, through a British squadron, and after being chased by two English ships of war, he arrived in France where he re- mained till the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, was con- cluded in 1748, when he was Exiled from France, and repaired to Avigon, where he was received with extraordnary honours by the Pope's Legate, at this place however he remained only a few months, and then went to Leige, and assumed the title of Baron de Montgomerie.
