" We welcome, therefore, the pioneers of Rich- land County. We give them greeting in the name of 40.000 citizens who inherit their labors, and bask in the sunshine of that civilization which they founded sixty years ago. We invite you to all the honors of this convention, and hope to hear from you of the daj'S and doings of the years we celebrate to-day."

So far as the record of the Society shows, the following names comprise a list of the pioneers who settled in Richland County, prior to the year 1820. This list is very meager and incom- plete, but in addition to this the reader is re- feiTcd to the histor}' of each township, in the gathering of which the compiler has been able to add a number of names to the pioneer list.
