Mr. Bright proceeded to Newcastle, where a great meeting was held in the Nelson Street Lecture Room, Mr. T. M. Greenhow in the chair. There was no attempt to controvert his arguments, no "stalwart yeoman" to meet him with the reasoning of an ash-stick, and thanks were passed to him enthusiastically. His next visit was to Sunderland, where he met a large audience, the mayor in the chair, and where his address produced a great sensation. We next hear of him at Winchester, in company with Mr. Cobden and Mr. Moore, instructing the farmers of Hampshire, the meeting passing resolutions against protection as unsound and injurious. Similar success attended Mr. Cobden amongst the farmers at a large meeting held at Lewes in Sussex.
