The meetings throughout the country, immediately following the attack in parliament on Cobden and the League, were so numerous that some pages of this volume would be filled with even the names of the places where they were held.
When fit place of utterance was found in London, the movement might truly be called National, and its history, from that period, can be found in the London press, and more especially in the League weekly newspaper, which, in the course of the summer, took the place of the small fortnightly Anti-Corn-Law Circular. I am therefore hereafter released from much of the detail which I felt to be necessary in giving an account of the origin of the League, and its progress in the provinces.
