136 SHORT NOTteS. hybrid. — Hieracium sciaphilum Uechtr. Abundant about Bollington and Macclesfield. A beautiful red-brown Melainpyrum pratense L., growing plentifully on VVybunbury Moss, answers well to the de- scription of var. ericetoruni D. Oliver. Utricularia neglecta Lehm. flowered there last summer ; and I was fortunate euougli to find Scheuchzeria palustris L., long supposed to be extinct in this station. — Edward S. Marshall. Additions to the Flora of Lancashire. — The undermentioned plants were gathered (1) during a short visit to Mr. Cosmo Melvill at Prestwich, v.-c. 59, S. Lanes. ; (2) during a three days' stay at Elswick, near Kirkham, v.-c. 60, W. Lanes. ; (3) m a walk from Lytham to St. Anne's, v.-c. 60 : — 59. hubiis Jissus Lindley. Growing close to one another as weeds in garden ground at Little Eccleston. — Foil/gala oxyptera Eeich. Sandhills, west of Lytham. Probably seen by many previous visitors, but apparently not recorded hitherto. — PotentUla reptcms X silvestris. Between Eccleston and Inskip. — E. Lindebeiyli P. J. Muell {teste Focke). Between Inskip and Elswick. — R. podophyUus P. J. Muell. {teste Kogers). Near the last-named. — R. curyii/olius x Lindleianus (probably, teste Kogers). Between Inskip and Eccleston. — Hieracium vulyatmn Fr. var. ravusculuni Dahlst. Sandhills near St. Anne's ; very local. — Gentiana baltica Murb. Sandhills between St. Anne's and Lytham, in quantity. Doubtless recorded before as Cr. cainpestris. btrictly annual ; most of the plants were only in bud on August 6th. — Edward S. Marshall. Note on Pachyphyllum. — Mr. Hemsley, in Bot. Biol. Amer. iv. 89, says: "Mr. Kidley informs us there is an undescribed species of this genus in the British Museum from Panama, collected by S. Hayes." Tnis specimen is not from Panama, but, as the ticket states, from Tunguragua, which is in Ecuador ; nor was it collected by Sutton Hayes, whose name Mr. Kidley has added to the ticket : I do not, however, identify the writing. The plant was subsequently identified by Mr. Kidley with B. Pastii. The Pavon specimen, on the faith of which B. disticlium is added to the Mexican flora, may be that plant, but Keichenbach has appended to it a note — "near crystalluiiim." — James Britten. All those interested in the study of our native Algae will regret to hear that Mr. T. H. Bufl'ham, A.L.S., died, after a short illness, at Walthamstow, on the 9th of February. Mr. Buflliam was an enthusiastic collector and a most accurate observer, and his many papers on the reproductive organs of the FioridecB are well known. We hope at a later date to publish a sketch of his life.
