ROB ROY M‘GREGOR.

ROBERT M‘GREGOR, or ROB ROY, was second son of Donald M‘Gregor, of the family of Glengyle, a Lieutenant Colonel in the kings service, by a daughter of Campbell of Glenlyon. Our hero was denominated Roy, a Celtic or Gælic phrase, significant of his ruddy complexion and colour of hair.

Rob Roy’s family were very respectable. His father was the friend and ally of Regent Murray, and brought to his assistance 300 M’Gregors, in an expedition to quell an insurrection of the MacPhersons in the north; for which service Murray granted him a lease of a farm, which still remains in the possession of the family.
