He is affiliated with the Presbyterian denomination. To young men he says: "Be temperate, truthful, honest, industrious and reliable. Whatever you find to do, strive to do it a little better than any one else."

He was married to Helen Benedict, November 11, 1884. In 1906 they had one daughter, Ruth Francis, living, having lost one infant child.
