Every subscription for one shilling adds six-pence certain to the gambling branch of the librarian's revenue, besides three-pence more to the mercantile part, in the exorbitant profits on the disposal of his goods. In the best frequented raffle-rooms, 10l. a-day are subscribed, affording to the owner, besides his profit on his stock, 30l. a week for gambling without risk.
Raffling occupies the chief concern of the evening till about nine o'clock, when the various parties move either homewards, or to some appointment or assignation, according to their situation and dispositions.
