'An American Glossary' is not a Slang Dictionary, though of necessity it includes specimens of vulgar diction.
The Illustrative Quotations, which are accurately dated, number 14,000; and of these more than 11,000 belong to the period before the Civil War.
In some instances a word or phrase which might be thought purely American is traced to an Elizabethan or Jacobean origin.
