perpetual self-examination to discover the
origin and meaning of ambition in literary
creation, a desire to reach a criterion, eternal
and unchangeable, of an eternal and un-
changeable beauty a strange mixture in-
deed of poetry, ethics, philosophy, aesthetic
and pedantry which makes the perusal of
his essay a pure joy. I shall give a transla-
tion of the more memorable passages and
define later their significance in the history
of criticism during the Settecento.
