with the glory which I had[1], before the world was, with Thee. I have manifested Thy Name to the men [2] whom Thou hast given Me out of the world. I pray for them. Holy Father, keep them in Thy Name[3]: that they may be one[4], as we[5] also are. I pray that Thou shouldst keep them from evil. Sanctify[6] them in truth.

And not for them only do I pray, but for them also [7] who through their word shall believe in Me: that they may be one in us, that the world may believe[8] that Thou hast sent Me[9]. Father, I will

  1. Which I had. i. e. give Me as Man the full glory of the Son of God; in other words, glorify Me by My resurrection, ascension and sitting at Thy right hand in heaven.
  2. To the men. Those whom Thou hast chosen by Thy grace to be My disciples.
  3. In Thy Name. In holy faith in Thee.
  4. One. One in faith and love.
  5. As ice. Are one in nature.
  6. Sanctify. Make them holy by Thy truth.
  7. Them also. Those, therefore, who would, in all ages, believe in our Lord, i. e. the whole Church.
  8. May believe. By reason of their wonderful unity.
  9. Sent Me. And that My work, the Church, comes from Thee.
