An /}£l for providing a publick Reward for [uch Perfon or Perfons as fhall difcover the Longitude at Sea^ with regard to the making Ex- periments of Propolals made for difcovering the Longitude. WHEREAS by an Adt of Parliament made in the twelfth Year of the Reign of her late preamble, reciting Majefty Qiieen Jnne, intituled. An A^for providing a publick Reward for fuch Perfon or Per- Clauies in hi iz Anne, fons as /hull difcover the Longitude at Sea, the Commiflioners therein named, or any five or more of/- ^' «"• ^S* them, have full Power to hear and receive anyPropofalorPropofals that fhall be made to them for dif- covering the faid Longitude ; and in cafe the faid Commiflioners, or any five or more of them, fhall be fo far fatisficd of the f robability of any fuch Difcovery, as to think it proper to make Experi- ment thereof, they fhall certify the flime, under their Hands and Seals, to the CommifTioners of the Navy for the Time being, together with the Perfons Names who are Authors of fuch Propofals ; and upon producing fuch Certificate, the faid Commiflioners are thereby authorized and required to make out a Bill or Bills for any fuch Sum or Sums of Money, not exceeding two thoufand Pounds, as the faid Commiflioners for the Difcovery of the faid Longitude, or any five or more of them, fhall think necefl'ary for making the Experiments, payable by the Treafurer of the Navy ; which Sum or Sums the Treafurer of the Navy is, by the faid Adl, required to pay immediately to fuch Perfon or Perfons as fhall be appointed by the faid Commiflioners to make thofe Experiments, out of any Money that fliall be in his Hands unapplied for the Ufe of the Navy : And whereas, for a due and fufficient Encouragement to any fuch Perfon or Perfons as fhall difcover a proper Method for finding the faid Longitude, it is likewife enadled by the faid Adt, That the firft Author or Au- thors, Difcoverer or Difcoverers, of any fuch Method, his or their Executors, Admiiniftrators or AfTigns, fhall be intitled to and have fuch Reward as in the faid Adt is particularly mentioned : And whereas by another Adl of Parliament made in the fourteenth Year of the Reign of his late 14 Geo. z. c> :,f, Majefty King George the Second, intituled, An Aol for furveying the Chief Ports and Head Lands on the Coajts c/" Great Britain <7«<^ Ireland, and the IJlands and Plantations thereto belonging, in order to Vm more exatl: Dcterjnination of the Loyigitude and Latitude thereof it was enadted. That the faid Com- miflioners for difcovering the faid Longitude, or any five or more of them, fhould have full Power to apply fuch Part of the faid Sum of two thoufand Pounds, mentioned in the faid firft recited Acf, as had not then been laid out in Experiments, as they fliould think neceflary for the making fuch Survey, and determining the Longitude and Latitude of the Chief Ports and Head Lands on the Coafts of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Iflands and Plantations thereto belonging ; and that fuch Sum or Sums, Part of the faid two thoufand Pounds, which the faid Commiflioners, or any five or more of them, fhould think ncceffary, fhould be paid immediately by the Treafurer of the Navy, to fuch Perfon or Perfons as fnould be appointed by the faid Commiflioners to make fuch Survey, and determine fuch Longitude and J^atitude, out of the Money that fhould be in the Hands of fuch Treafurer unapplied for the Ufe of the Navy : And whereas by an Adl made in the twenty-fixth Year of the Reign of his late Majefty King George the Second, and 26 Gw. z. *.*.■> intituled.
