A.D. 1777

McLean, John Hill, Chriſtian Carpenter, and James White, be, and are hereby appointed Commiſſioners for the Purpoſes aforeſaid; and they, or a Majority of them, are hereby impowered and required to agree and contract with Workmen for building a Court-Houſe, Priſon, and Stocks, for the Uſe of the ſaid County, at ſuch Place as they ſhall think moſt convenient, on that Tract of Land purchaſed by the late Commiſſioners for that Purpoſe, and cauſe the ſame to be completed within the Term of Two Years.

To call former Commiſſioners to account.III. AND be it further Enacted, by the Authority aforeſaid, That the ſaid Commiſſioners herein named ſhall have, and they are hereby declared to have full Power and Authority to demand, ſue for, recover, and receive, of and from the late Sheriffs of ſaid County, or other Perſons in whoſhe Hands the ſame may be lodged, all and every Sum and Sums of Money which have been laid as a Tax or Taxes on the Inhabitants of ſaid County for the Purpoſe aforeſaid, for which the Sheriff or other Perſons, or any of them, are liable; and in Caſe of Failure or Neglect in paying the ſaid Monies to the Commiſſioners aforeſaid by the ſaid Sheriffs, other Perſons, or any of them, he or they ſo failing or neglecting, ſhall be liable to the ſame Penalties, and the ſame Mode of Recovery ſhall be had againſt him or them, as by Law ſhall or may be had againſt Sheriffs who neglect or refuſe to account for and pay Public Taxes.

Power to collect, or lay another TaxIV. AND whereas a certain Tax was laid on the Inhabitants of ſaid County by the Juſtices thereof, in Virtue of an Act of Aſſembly paſſed in the Year of our Lord One Thouſand Seven Hundred and Seventy Four, which Tax hath not been collected, no Officer having been appointed to receive the ſame; Be it therefore Enacted, by the Authority aforeſaid, That the Juſtices of the ſaid County of Tryon ſhall have, and they are hereby declared to have full Power and Authority to enforce the ſaid Tax, or reverſe it, and lay another Tax ſufficient to compleat the Buildings aforeſaid, which Tax laid or enforced by Virtue of this Act ſhall be collected and accounted for by the Sheriff of the ſaid County; and on Neglect of the Sheriff to account for and pay the ſame to the Commiſſioners herein before named, he ſhall be liable to ſame Pains and Penalties, and the ſame Mode of Recovery ſhall be had againſt him, as by Law may be had againſt Sheriffs who neglect or refuſe to account for and pay Public Taxes.


CHAP. XIV.

An Act for appointing Commiſſioners to finiſh the building of a Court-Houſe, Priſon, and Stocks, in the County of Guilford.

Preamble.I.WHEREAS the Public Buildings for the County of Guilford are not yet finiſhed, on Account of the Tax levied for that Purpoſe not being all collected, by Reaſon of the Courts of Juſtice being diſcontinued: For Remedy whereof,
