1. Plain, oblong table, dark, soiled and griiny. The table must be about six feet in length.

5. Old kitchen chairs. One to smash up.

6. A wede door made of heavy planks, built solid, and and in solid frame, braced strong. Bolts on outside and bars to act with offect of noise of bolting and barring a heavy door. This door swings slowly shut whon anyone opens it.

7. Door opening to a cupboard. No bolt or lock on this door—important.

8. Walls of cupboard.

9. Large window. Closed throughous act. Grimy and dirty glass so that nothing can be seen through the window, but all the panes intact, none broken. Black backing to window. Strong bars behind the window, to show when the glass is broken—these bars must not be seen until the window is naturally broken.

10. Heap of old boxes, one of which is used to hide the safety lamp.

11. Small hinged box to conceal light representing Holmes' cigar.

NOTE.

In addition the room should be littered with several old leather trunks and hampers against the walls, loose rope and coils here and there.

HAND PROPS.

Large clasp-knife for Craigin. Rope and large handkerchief, miner's safety lamp (lighted), for McTague. Cab whistle for Prince, also cigarettes in case and matches. Small whistle for Larrabee, package and cigar. Revolver for Leary. Cigar, matches, and wallet with Bank of England notes in for Holmes, also hunting crop.

OFF STAGE.

Two oil lamps lighted ready off L., for Bannick. Stone slab with glass crash ready off M.

LIGHT PLOT.

Blue foots and blue border quarter up. Blue limes to flood C. of stage, and throw light on characters in such a way that it may appear to come from lantern or lamp used in Act. Trick electric cigar. (illegible text) light in box on window frame. An oil lamp is carried on put white foots up quarter.

Note. As Holmes smashes lamp, every light in house and on stage must go out instantly. As safety lamp is pulled from beneath box, blue and white foots and border full up.
