PREFACE

read the book in manuscript; and the late Dr. J. E. K. Aggrey, who only a few weeks before his death guided the choice of African characters for these pages and lit the flame of his own enthusiasm in the writer’s mind.

The resources of the fine Library of the Royal Colonial Institute in London, including many rare books on Africa, have been always at my service, together with the expert advice of the Librarian and his staff. From first to last the work of collaboration with the officers of the Missionary Education Movement has been as easy and almost as swift as if no ocean rolled between. One and all they leave me gratefully in their debt.
