FREEDOM AND JUSTICE

145 Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life
(GERMANY. L. M.)
Frank Mason North, 1905 William Gardiner's Sacred Melodies, 1815

  1. Where cross the crowded ways of life,
    Where sound the cries of race and clan,
    Above the noise of selfish strife,
    We hear thy voice, Son of man !

  2. In haunts of wretchedness and need,
    On shadowed thresholds dark with fears,
    From paths where hide the lures of greed,
    We catch the vision of thy tears.

  3. The cup of water given for thee
    Still holds the freshness of thy grace ;
    Yet long these multitudes to see
    The sweet compassion of thy face.

  4. Master from the mountain side,
    Make haste to heal those hearts of pain;
    Among these rest-less throngs abide,
    tread the city's streets again ;

  5. Till sons of men shall learn thy love,
    And follow where thy feet have trod;
    Till glorious from thy heaven above,
    Shall come the city of our God. Amen.

146 Ring Out the Old, Ring In the New
(WALTHAM. L. M.)
Alfred Tennyson, 1850 J. Baptiste Calkin, 1872

  1. Ring out the old, ring in the new,
    Ring, happy bells, across the snow;
    The year is going, let him go ;
    Ring out the false, ring in the true.
  2. Ring out a slowly dying cause,
    And ancient forms of party strife,
    Ring in the nobler modes of life,
    With sweeter manners, purer laws.
  3. Ring out old shapes of foul disease ;
    Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
    Ring out the thou-sand wars of old,
    Ring in the thou-sand years of peace.
  4. Ring in the valiant man and free,
    The larger heart, the kindlier hand;
    Ring out the darkness of the land,
    Ring in the Christ that is to be. Amen
