PLATE LVI

Oreithyia and Boreas

Boreas, well characterized as a thick-set and bristly-haired man of cruel countenance, has grasped Oreithyia around the waist, and, lifting her off her feet, is on the point of flying away with her through the air. A sister of the maiden, Pandrosos, is hastening away in fear, while Herse, another sister, runs forward to lend aid. From a red-figured amphora of about 475 b.c., in Munich (Furtwängler-Reichhold, Griechische Vasenmalerei, No. 94). See pp. 73-74, 265.
