PLATE IX

Trimūrti

The Trimūrti ("Triad") is a relatively late development of Indian thought. It represents the union of Brahmā (the Creator), Viṣṇu (the Preserver), and Śiva (the Destroyer). Here Śiva faces front, the bearded head to the left being Brahmā. From the cave of Elephanta, Bombay. After a photograph in the Library of the India Office, London.
