GEORGE I. (son of Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hanover, by Sophia, Princess Palatine, granddau. of James I.), born at Osnabruck 28 May, 1CC0, succeeded his father as Elector of Hanover and Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, and in all his titles and dominions (except the Bishopric of Osnabruck, which fell to his brother Duke Ernest), 24 Jan. 1698, K.G. 18 June, 1701, Duke of Zello 1705, Arch-Treasurer of the Empire 1710, commanded the army of the Rhine against the French 1707-10; crowned in Westminster Abbey by Archbishop Tenison 20 Oct. 1714, having ascended the throne by virtue of the Act of Settlement, "King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith "; the Order of the Bath was revived 17 June, 1725; d. 11 June, 1727, bur. in Westminster Abbey, having in. 21 Nov. 1682, his cousin Sophia Dorothea, only dau. and heir of George William, Duke of Brunswick and Zelle; divorced 28 Dec. 1694; d. 22 Nov. 1726, having had a son and dau.

GEORGE II. born at Hanover 30 Oct. 1683, created Baron of Tewkesbury, co. Glouc. Viscount Northallerton, co York. Earl of Milford Haven, co. Pembroke, and Marquis and Duke of Cambridge, 9 Nov. 1706, elected K.G. 4 April, 1706, created Prince of Wales 4 Oct. 1714, same year on the accession of George I. declared by Parliament Earl of Chester and Flint, Duke of Cornwall and Rothsay (without creation); distinguished himself at the battle of Oudenarde 11 July, 1708, where his horse was shot under him; crowned with his Queen at Westminster Abbey, by William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury, 11 Oct. 1727; d. at Kensington 25 Oct. 1760, bur. in Westminster Abbey, having m. 22 Ang. (o.s.), 1705, Wilhelmina Charlotte Caroline, dau. of John Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Anspach; she d. 20 Nov. 1737, bur. in Westminster Abbey, having had 3 sons and 5 daus.
