She returned to east Ten nessee in 1851, and on December 13, 1857, married Judge David T. Patterson. She presided at the White House in place of her invalid mother, and, with her sister, assisted in the first reception that was held by President Johnson, January 1, 1866. During the early spring an appropriation of $30,- 000 was made by congress to refurnish the execu tive mansion, and Mrs. Patterson superintended the purchase. Another daughter, MARY, born in Greenville, Tenn., May 8, 1832; died in Bluff City, Tenn., April 19, 1883, married Daniel Stover, of Carter county, who died in 1862, and in 1869 she married William R. Brown, of Greenville, Tenn. The president had three sons, Charles (1830- 63), Robert (1834- 69), who was his secretary, and Andrew (1852-79).
