Allied to H. guttatus and H. subocellatus, but with the body deeper and the spinous dorsal higher.

The height of the body is contained 212 in the total length (without caudal), the length of the head 234. Length of the snout equal to the diameter of the eye, which is one fourth of the length of the head and equal to the width of the interorbital space. Teeth conical, brown, equal in size. Four series of scales on the cheek. Cleft of the mouth rather narrow, slightly oblique, with the lower jaw slightly projecting and with the maxillary net quite reaching the vertical from the front margin of the orbit. The length of the eighth dorsal spine is two fifths of that of the head. In the adult the soft dorsal and anal and the ventral fin are produced into points. Brownish above, a deep black spot on the end of the operculum and another in the middle of the body; three or four series of round bluish spots on the cheek and gill-cover. Fins without spots.
