Sunflower

Ukraine is normally the world’s top producer of sunflower meal, oil, and seed and the world’s top exporter of sunflower meal and oil. Sunflowers are sown in April and May, with harvest typically beginning in September. Production is primarily concentrated in the eastern and southeastern regions of the country.

Ukraine produces one-third of the world’s sunflower oil and accounts for nearly half of global exports. Those exports were valued at $6.4 billion in 2021. Top markets in 2021 were India (31 percent), the European Union (30 percent), and China (15 percent). Through March 1, 2022, Ukraine had shipped about 62 percent forecasted 2021/22 sunflower oil exports.

Ukraine supplies nearly two-thirds of the world’s sunflower meal, with exports valued at $1.2 billion in 2021. Top markets in 2021 were China (48 percent), the European Union (25 percent), and Turkey (7 percent). Through March 1, 2022, Ukraine has shipped about 61 percent of forecasted 2021/22 sunflower meal exports.


Other Oilseeds

For rapeseed, Ukraine is the world’s sixth-largest producer and third-largest exporter, with shipments totaling $1.7 billion in 2021. Rapeseed exports are front loaded and have concluded for the 2021/22 marketing year. Winter rapeseed, which accounts for about 96 percent of Ukraine’s total crop, is planted in September and October and harvested in July and August. Rapeseed is grown throughout the country but is concentrated in the south.

For soybeans, Ukraine is the world’s ninth-largest producer and seventh-largest exporter, with sales valued at $600 million in 2021. Through March 1, 2022, Ukraine had shipped about 65 percent of forecasted soybean exports for the 2021/22 marketing year. Soybeans are planted from April through May and harvested in August and September. Production is concentrated in the central and western regions of the country.


Corn

Ukraine is the world’s sixth-largest corn producer and is forecasted to be the fourth-largest exporter in marketing year 2021/22. Through March 2022, Ukraine had shipped about 80 percent of its expected corn exports for the marketing year. In 2021, Ukraine’s corn exports were valued at $5.9 billion, with 32 percent of shipments destined for China and another 30 percent to the EU. Other key destinations include Egypt, Iran, and Turkey. Corn production occurs in the country’s central to northern regions.


Wheat

Ukraine is the world’s seventh-largest wheat producer and is forecasted to be the fifth-largest exporter for the 2021/22 marketing year. In 2021, Ukrainian wheat exports were valued at $5.1 billion, with Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan, and Bangladesh as the primary destinations. Through February 2022, Ukraine had shipped approximately 95 percent of its expected wheat exports for the marketing year, which is typical. Winter wheat accounts for about 97 percent of Ukraine’s total wheat production. It is planted from early September to mid-November and harvested between July and September. Production is concentrated in the southeastern region of the country.
