Section 1372 of title 10, United States Code, is amended by striking out "his physical examination for promotion" in paragraphs (3) and (4) and inserting in lieu thereof "a physical examination". SEC. 578. REVISIONS TO MISSING PERSONS AUTHORITIES. (a) REPEAL OF APPLICABILITY OF AUTHORITIES TO DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES AND CONTRACTOR EMPLOYEES.— (1) Section 1501 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— (A) in subsection (c)— (i) by striking out "applies in the case of and all that follows through "(1) Any member" and inserting in lieu thereof "applies in the case of any member"; and (ii) by striking out paragraph (2); and (B) by striking out subsection (f). (2) Section 1503(c) of such title is amended— (A) in paragraph (1), by striking out "one individual described in paragraph (2)" and inserting in lieu thereof "one military officer"; (B) by striking out paragraph (2); and (C) by redesignating paragraphs (3) and (4) as paragraphs (2) and (3), respectively. (3) Section 1504(d) of such title is amended— (A) by striking out the text of paragraph (1) and inserting in lieu thereof the following new text: "A board appointed under this section shall be composed of at least three members who are officers having the grade of major or lieutenant commander or above."; and (B) in paragraph (4), by striking out "section 1503(c)(4)" and inserting in lieu thereof "section 1503(c)(3)". (4) Paragraph (1) of section 1513 of such title is amended to read as follows: "(1) The term 'missing person' means a member of the armed forces on active duty who is in a missing status.". (b) REPORT ON PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF STATUS.—(1) Section 1502 of such title is amended— (A) in subsection (a)(2)— (i) by striking out "48 hours" and inserting in lieu thereof"10 days"; and (ii) by striking out "theater component commander with jurisdiction over the missing person" and inserting in lieu thereof "Secretary concerned"; (B) by striking out subsection (b); (C) by redesignating subsection (c) as subsection (b); and (D) in subsection (b), as so redesignated, by striking out the second sentence. (2) Section 1503(a) of such title is amended by striking out "section 1502(b)" and inserting in lieu thereof "section 1502(a)". (3) Section 1513 of such title is amended by striking out paragraph (8). (c) FREQUENCY OF SUBSEQUENT REVIEWS. —Subsection (b) of section 1505 of such title is amended to read as follows: "(b) FREQUENCY OF SUBSEQUENT REVIEWS.— The Secretary concerned shall conduct inquiries into the whereabouts and status of a person under subsection (a) upon receipt of information that
