CHAP. 84.-An Act To prevent and unish the deeecratien mutihticn, or (H- B- 1**822-] improper use, within the District of Columbia, of the flag of the United States of (r¤we,N¤.ms.] America- Be it enacted by the Senate and Hows$;f1%grresent4zt·ives of the United {’,i:lFg‘$*s*;;§g‘}2l*;*gb*¤ States of America in Congress assemb , at hereafter any pprson rnnaxnnens an in- who, within the District of Columbia, in any manner for exhr ition §g “ “'°'°"°“°"‘· or displa , shall lace or cause to be placed any word, figure, mark, picture, design, elrawing or any advertisement of any nature upon any ila , standard, colors or ensign of the United States of America; or shelf expose or cause to be exposed to public view any such Egg, standard, colors or ensign upon which shall have been print , painted or otherwise placed or to which shall be attached, alapgnded, ailixed or annexed any word, figure, mark, picture, desiii or wing or any advertisement of any nature; or w 0, within the District of Columbia, shall manufacture, sell, expose for sale or to public view or give away or have in possession for sale or to be given away or for use for any purpose, any article or substance being an article of merchandise, or a receptacle for merchandise or article or thing for carry- ing or transporting merchandise, upon which shall have been printed, amted, attached or otherwise placed a representation of any such Sag, standard, colors or ensign, to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark or distinguish the article or substance on which so placed; unanam, among, or who, within the Dktrict of Columbia, shall publicly mutilate, °"’· deface, deEle or defy, trample upon or cast contempt, either b word or act, upon an such ilag, stan ard, colors or ensign, shall be cllaemed guilty 0 a misdlemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $100 or by_ imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both, in comrgglging or ¤b· the discretion of the court. The words "ii , standard, colors, or ’°°°‘° ens1gn," as used herein, shall include anynhag, standard, colors, ensign or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or re resented on an substance, of any size evident y purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in an number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard or ensign of the United States of America.
