CONTINGENT EXPENSES, D EPARTMENT OF LABOR For contingent and miscellaneous expenses of the offices and bureaus of the department, for which appropriations for contingent and miscellaneous expenses are not specifically made, including the purchase of stationery, furniture and repairs to the same, carpets, matting, oilcloth, file cases, towels, ice, brooms, soap, sponges, laundry, street-car fares not exceeding $200 ; lighting and heating ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of motor cycles and motor trucks ; purchase, exchange, maintenance, and repair of a motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle, to be used only for official purposes ; freight and express charges, newspapers not exceed- ing $400, for which payment may be made in advance ; newspaper clippings not to exceed $1, 800, postag e to f oreign count ries, tele- gr aph an d tele phone servic e, typ ewrite rs, add ing ma chines , and other labor-saving devices ; purchase of law books, books of reference, and periodicals not exceeding $3,250 ; in all, $41,500 ; and in addition thereto such sum as may be necessary, not in excess of $13,500, to facilitate the purchase, through the central purchasing office as provided in the Act of June 17, 1910 (Thirty-sixth Statutes at Large, pa ge 531 ), of certai n supp lies f or the Immigr ation Servic e, sha ll be deducted from the appropriation "Expenses of regulating immi- gration " made for the fiscal year 1929 and added to the appropria- tion "Contingent expenses, Department of Labor," for that year ; and the total sum thereof shall be and constitute the appropriation for contingent expenses for the Department of Labor, to be expended through the c entral purch asing office (Divis ion of Publi cation s and Supplies), Department of Labor : Provided, That expenditures from appro priat ions cont ained in t his Act f or th e mai nten ance, upke ep and repair, exclusive of garage rent, pay of operator, fuel and lubri- cants, on any one motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicle used by the Department of Labor shall not exceed one-third of the market price of a new vehicle of the same make or class, and in any case not more than $500 . Rent : For rent of buildings and parts of buildings in the District of Columbia for the use of the Department of Labor, $68,000 . Printing and binding : For printing and binding for the Depart- me nt of Labor, inclu ding a ll its burea us, off ices, instit utions , and se rvices locat ed in Washin gton, Distri ct of C olumbi a, and elsew here, $205,000 . BUREAU OF LABOR STA TI ST ICS Salar ies : for the commissioner and other personal services in the District of Columbia in accordance with the Classification Act of 1923, $220,000. Traveling expenses of special agents and employees ; experts and temporary assistance for field service outside of the District of Columbia, to be paid at the rate of not exceeding $8 per day ; per sonal servic es in the Di strict of Co lumbia not to excee d $29, 500, including also temporary statistical clerks, stenographers, and type- writers in the District of Columbia, to be selected from civil-service registers, the same person to be employed for not more than six co nsecu tive mont hs ; traveling expenses of officers and employees, purchase of periodicals, documents, price quotations, and reports and materials for reports and bulletins of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, $80,000 . Appropriations herein made for the Bureau of Labor Statistics shall be available for expenses of attendance at meetings concerned with the work of said bureau when incurred on the written authority of the Secretary of Labor .
