Cir. 572. 1928 . the preservative treatment of timber ; to seek, through investigations and the planting of native and foreign species, suitable trees for the treeless regions ; to erect necessary buildings : Provided, That the cost of any building purchased, erected, or as improved shall not exceed $1,500, except as pr ovided by the Act of March 3, 1925 ; to pay all expenses necessary to protect, administer, and improve the n atio nal fore sts, inc ludi ng t ree plan ting in the fore st r eser ves to prevent erosion, drift, surface wash, and soil waste and the forma- tion of floods, and including the payment of rewards under regu- lations of the Secretary of Agriculture for information leading to the arrest and conviction for violation of the laws and regulations relating to fires in or near national forests, or for the unla wful taking of, o r inju ry to , Gove rnment prope rty ; to ascertain the natural conditions upon and utilize the national forests ; to trans- port and care for fish and game supplied to stock the nati onal forests or the waters therein ; to employ agents, clerks, assistants, and other labor required in practical forestry and in the adminis- tration of national forests in the city of Washington and elsewhere ; to collate, digest, report, and illustrate the results of experiments and investigations made by the Forest Service ; to purchase neces- sary supplies, apparatus, office fixtures, law books, reference and technical books and technical journals for officers of the Forest Service stationed outside of Washington, and for medical supplies and services and other assistance necessary for the immediate relief of artisans, laborers, and other employees engaged in any hazardous work under the Forest Service ; to pay freight, express, telephone, and telegraph charges ; for electric light and power, fuel, gas, ice, and washing towels, and official traveling and ot her ne cessar y expenses, including traveling expenses for legal and fiscal off ic ers while performing Forest Service work ; and for rent outside of the District of Columbia, as follows For necessary expenses for general administrative purposes, including the salary of the Chief Forester and other personal services in the District of Columbia, $340,600 . For the employment of forest supervisors, deputy forest super- visors, forest rangers, forest guards, and administrative clerical assistants on the national forests, and for additional salaries and f ield -sta tion exp ense s, i nclu ding the mai nten ance of nurs erie s, col- lecting seed, and planting, necessary for the use, maintenance, improvement, and protection of the national forests and of addi- tional national forests created or to be created under section 11 of the Act of March 1, 1911 (Thirty-sixth Statutes at Large, page 963), and under the Act of June 7, 1924 (Forty-third Statutes at Large, pages 653-655), and lands under contract for purchase or for the acquisition of which condemnation proceedings hav e been instituted for the purposes of said Acts, and for necessary miscel- laneous expenses incident to the general administration of the Forest Service and of the national forests In national forest district one, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and South Dakota, $1,352,790 : Provided, That the Secretary of Agri- culture is authorized to use not to exceed $200 in caring for the graves of fire fighters buried at Wallace, Idaho ; Priest River, Idaho ; Newport, Washington ; and Saint Maries, Idaho ; In national forest district two, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Minnesota, $763,771 : Provided, That not to exceed $500 of this appropriation may be expended for the maintenance of the herd of long-horned cattle on the Wichita National Forest ; In national forest district three, Arizona and New Mexico, $674,172 ; 553 Proviso.
