General expenses . To enable the Secretary of Agriculture to experiment and to .make Exper emteanto United a nd co ntinue inves tigati ons an d rep ort on fores try, n ation al for ests, States. forest fires, and lumbering, but no part of this appropriation shall be used for any experiment or test made outside the jurisdiction of the United States ; to advise the owners of woodlands as to the proper care of the same ; to investigate and test American timber and timbe r tr ees and t heir uses , an d met hods for the pres ervat ive treatment of timber ; to seek, through investigations and the plant- ing of native and foreign species, suitable trees for the treeless regions ; to erect necessary buildings : Provided, That the cost of -Pro, "-- any
buifainge. any build ing purc hased , er ected , or as i mpro ved, excl usiv e of the cost of constructing a water supply or sanitary system and of con- necting the same with any such building, and exclusive of the cost of any tower upon which a lookout house may be erected, shall not exceed $2,590 ; to pay all expenses necessary to protect, administer, forPrroectionoinational and improve the national forests, including tree planting in the forest reserves to prevent erosion, drift, surface wash, and soil waste and the formation of floods ; and including the payment of rewards under regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture for info rmati on l eadi ng to the arre st a nd co nvic tion for viol ation of the laws and regulations relating to fires in or near national forests, or for the unlawful taking of, or injury to, Government property
to a scert ain the natur al c ondit ions upon and uti lize the natio nal forests ; to transport and care for fish and game supplied to stock gamem of fish and the national forests or the waters therein ; to employ agents, clerks, assis tants, and o ther l abor requir ed in practi cal fo restr y and in the administration of national forests in the city of Washington and elsewhere ; to collate, digest, report and illustrate the results of experiments and investigations made by the Forest Service ; to purchase necessary supplies, apparatus office fixtures, law books, Station supplies, etc . refe rence and tec hnica l bo oks a nd t echni cal jour nals for offic ers of the Forest Service stationed outside of Washington, and for medical supplies and services and other assistance necessary for the immediate relief of artisans, laborers, and other employees engaged in any hazardous work under the Forest Service : Provided further, warehouse mainte- That the appropriations for the work of the Forest Service shall nan `B' be available for meeting the expenses of warehouse maintenance and the procurement, care, and handling of supplies and materials stored therein for distribution to projects under the supervision of the Forest Service and for sale and distribution to other Govern- ment activities, the cost of such supplies and materials, including the cost of supervision, transportation, and handling, to be reim- bursed to appropriations current at the time additional supplies and materials are procured .for warehouse stocks from the appro- priations chargeable with the cost of stock issued ; to pa f reight, express, telephone, and telegraph charges ; for electric light and power, fuel, gas, ice, and washing towels, and official traveling 'and Outside rent. other necessary expenses, incluing traveling expenses for legal and fiscal officers while performing Forest Service work
