Res ., No. 102.] and individuals an invitation to join the Government and people of the United States in the observance of the three-hundredth anniversary of the first permanent settlement in the Delaware River Valley, and for other purposes . Preamble . del phia, Pennsyl vania, and at several plac es in other States, durin g the year 1938, celebrations commemorating the three-hundredth anniversary of the first permanent settlement in the Delaware Riv er Valley, sa id settlement being also t he first set tlement of th e colony of New Sweden, wh ich embraced parts of the present States of Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey ; and Whereas, in accordance with a resolution of the General Assembly of the Sta te of Delaware, appr oved March 20, 1935, the Governor of said State has appointed a commission of eleven members, desig- nated as the Delaware Swedish Tercentenary Commission, with authority "to prepare plans for a fitting celebration by the State of Delaware on the occasion of the three-hundredth anniversary in 1938 of the founding of the first permanent settlement and the establishment of the first permanent government upon the soil of Delaware
and to cooperate with other commissions or committees representing the city of Wilmington ; historical, patriotic, and other societies of the State of Delaware and other States ; the governments of other States ; and the National Govern- ments of the United States and Sweden" ; and Whereas at its annual meeting held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Janua ry 17, 1935 , the Penns ylvan ia Fe derat ion of Hist orica l Soc ieties (embra cing seventy- three constit uent histori cal societies ) adopted the following resolution : "Whereas p lans are in preparat ion to celebrate the tercentenary of the landing of the Swedes on the Delaware and the establish- ment of the first permanent white settlement, and the first gov- ernment in Pennsylvania, in 1638 : Now therefore, be it "Resolved, That this Feder ation pledge its hea rty endorsement to such commemoration ; and
