Salaries and expenses: For all necessary expenditures of the Bitu- minous Coal Division in carrying out the purposes of the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937, approved April 26, 1937 (50 Stat. 72), including per- sonal services and rent in the District of Columbia and elsewhere; traveling expenses, including expenses of attendance at meetings which, in the discretion of the Secretary of the Interior, are neces- sary for the efficient discharge of the responsibilities of the Division; contract stenographic reporting services; stationery and office sup- plies; purchase, rental, exchange, operation, maintenance, and repair of reproducing, photographing, and other such equipment, type- writers, calculating machines, mechanical tabulating equipment, and other office appliances and labor-saving devices; printing and binding; witness fees and fees and mileage in accordance with section 8 of the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937; not to exceed $4,500 for hire, mainte- nance, operation, and repair of motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicles including one for use in the District of Columbia; garage rentals; miscellaneous items, including those for public instruction and information deemed necessary; and not to exceed $1,800 for pur- chase and exchange of newspapers, lawbooks, reference books, and periodicals, $2,250,000.
